Gemma Teller and Natalie Wood

Katey Sagal Sons of Anarchy

Katey Sagal as Gemma in Sons of Anarchy on FX

When I grow up I want to be a cross between Katey Sagal as Gemma Teller from Sons of Anarchy and Natalie Wood. I’ve mentioned this to a handful of people and I get the same reaction: um, good luck with that.

They seem to believe this combo is not possible, but I think it is. Stop thinking of Natalie Wood in Miracle on 34th Street and West Side Story. Think of when she played Louise Hovick aka Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy. She wasn’t always Santa and true love. She was also capable of playing roles with Machiavellian principles when necessary.

I’m not exactly looking to be a stripper or a motorcycle gang old lady in my future. I just like some of what these characters have going on: They are beautiful. They are confident. They never sacrifice their femininity to do what they need to. They study a male-dominated world and figure out how to turn it upside down. And then run it. They are brunettes (big bonus points). They do whatever is necessary to protect their families. They make a decision and live with the consequences. They understand every decision has consequences. They look at their lives with clear eyes, without flinching.

Maybe what I like the most is they both wear black clothes with great shoes. A girl has to have her priorities straight.

  1. Your ‘bonus points for brunettes’ underscores my love for Mad Men’s Joan (Holloway) Harris.
She’s a redhead. And embodies every single bit of it.

I’m glad you see the beauty in Gemma too. We actually named our baby girl after this character. I do not, however, look forward to the day when she asks how we got her name and I have to explain “well, there was this show about a motorcycle gang. . . . “

  3. GURL – I love it! Woulda loved it more if you would of posted the pic of Jax butt when he was ….. the porn chic…. But I do love it!

You have the Natalie Wood part down pat, according to your photos. I think you may already have a jump on Katey’s Gemma because your blog shows a lot of how you handle yourself. You can have the drive of a Gemma without offending the rest of society. You see the beauty of Gemma but are chilled by the nerve she shows. Great thought provoking blog today, thanks.

  5. Okay I can be wrong but the in my mind the last part already describes you.
